In May 2018, a visit to the Vakfikebir pilot area, Trabzon was carried out for the implementation of the project "Development of a Common Protocol to Assess the Impact of Forest Management Practices on Climate Change" under the EuropeAid program, co-funded by the European Union and Turkey.
Although the weather was not ideal, the responsible professors Nuray Misir and Mehmet Misir and postgraduate students of the Department of Forest Engineering of the Karadeniz Technical University of Trabzon, supported by staff of the Forest Service, introduced the methodology for field data collection that will be used for the estimation of carbon captured in the beech forests of the region.
The visit at the pilot area was attended by Associate Professor Spyros Galatsidas and PhD student Ms. Despoina Vlachaki from the Department of Forestry and Management of the Environment and Natural Resources, Democritus University of Thrace.
Currently, field data analysis is being carried out and forest management protocols are being developed to strengthen the function of forests as carbon sinks. The results of the programme will be presented in a workshop that will be organized by the Karadeniz Technical University next September in Trabzon.
The project kick-off meeting took place on 13 October 2017 in the city of Orestiada, Greece. This was the first meeting of the entire project team consisting of Professor Mehmet Misir (KTU), Professor Nuray Misir (KTU), Dr. Onur Tolga Okan (KTU), Assoc. Professor Spyros Galatsidas (DUTH), Assis. Professor Paraskevi Karanikola (DUTH) and PhD Candidate Despoina Vlachaki (DUTH).
During the kick-off meeting the project team had the chance to meet face to face and discuss the details of the project in terms of administration as well as implementation. The main topics included the rules and expectations of the project and the detailed work plan for each work package. The issues discussed were summarized in the kick-off meeting minutes. The next project meeting will be carried out in Trabzon, Turkey in March 2018.
